As vaccines continue to roll out, movies are beginning to land in theaters again–still, many continue to hit OTT streaming or VOD, including some of the month’s most anticipated movies like Netflix’s ‘Concrete Cowboy’, Prime Video’s ‘Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse’, and Warner Bros.’ ‘Mortal Kombat’ (the last of which will simultaneously release in theaters and on HBO Max).

‘Concrete Cowboy’

‘Say Your Prayers’

‘Say Your Prayers’ follows Tim (Melling, ‘The Queen’s Gambit’) and Vic (Brooke, ‘The Crown’), orphaned brothers and radical Christian hitmen who are tasked with assassinating the famed atheist Professor John Huxley. They travel to rural Ilkley and attempt to do so, but things go awry when they murder the wrong man–hounded by the foul-mouthed Detective Inspector Brough (Anna Maxwell Martin), they must find a way to complete their mission.

‘Shiva Baby’

Cast: Rachel Sennott, Molly Gordon, Polly Draper

A strong debut for writer/director Emma Seligman, ‘Shiva Baby’ follows bisexual college student Danielle (Sennott) who runs into her sugar daddy and her ex-girlfriend while attending a Jewish funeral service with her parents. It’s awkwardly hilarious and a great reflection of middle-class malaise.

‘Space Dogs: Tropical Adventure’

Release Date: April 2 in limited theaters, April 6 on VOD

‘Tropical Adventure’ is the third entry in the Russian CGI ‘Space Dogs’ series, beginning with the 2010 ‘Space Dogs’ (originally titled ‘Belka & Strelka–Star Dogs’) based on Belka and Strelka, the real-life Soviet space dogs who spent a day in space on August 19, 1960. In ‘Tropical Adventure’, Belka (Monge) and Strelka (Chayeb) are sent to investigate a mysterious and dangerous whirlpool that threatens the Atlantic tropics.

‘The Oak Room’

Release Date: April 2 on VOD

Director: Cody Calahan | Writer: Peter Genoway

Cast: RJ Mitte, Peter Outerbridge, Ari Millen

Set in a blue-collar bar during a raging snowstorm, ‘The Oak Room’ is a tightly constructed thriller with a haunting mystery that unfolds with a simple and classic premise–a man walks into a bar. Like the tagline says, “You’re never going to believe what happened at the Oak Room.”

‘The Unholy’

Release Date: April 2 in theaters

‘The Unholy’ follows Alice (Brown), a hearing-impaired girl who’s visited by the Virgin Mary and granted the ability to hear, speak, and heal the sick. Word spreads, attracting a disgraced journalist (Morgan) who goes to investigate, only to witness terrifying events that put into question whether these supposed miracles are the work of Virgin Mary or something else.

‘WeWork: or The Making and Breaking of a $47 Billion Unicorn’

Cast: Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashton Kutcher, Adam Neumann

This upcoming Hulu documentary explores the frat-boy culture and cultish leadership of WeWork, the company behind one of the biggest venture capitalist bubbles in recent years that saw $47 billion lost in six weeks.

Driven by the tragic loss of his young daughter to a car accident, writer/director D. As the town copes with her loss, she embarks on a mysterious quest to fulfill a childhood dream of becoming a superhero and saving the world.

Expertly acted, directed, and written, ‘Slalom’ is a compelling and relevant new drama that’s both empathetic and unflinching in its depiction of a familiar story, freshly told.

‘The Tunnel’

Cast: Thorbjørn Harr, Ylva Fuglerud, Lisa Carlehed

‘The Tunnel’ is the second Norwegian important on the list (Pål, for the record, is the Norwegian Paul), initially released on December 25, 2019, as ‘Tunnelen’–It follows a bulldozer driver (Harr) during a tunnel fire in a 9-kilometer road tunnel.

‘Thunder Force’

Jason Bateman appears as a villain named The Crab.

Melissa McCarthy will appear as Actor Hela in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ (like Matt Damon’s Loki in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’) and as Ursula in Disney’s upcoming live-action ‘The Little Mermaid’

‘Voyagers’

In ‘Voyagers’, a crew of astronauts, specially bred for heightened intelligence and suppressed emotions, embark on a multi-generational mission to colonize a distant planet–however, disturbing revelations cause the crew to defy their orders and experiment with their primal urges.

Critically acclaimed for its unconventional documentary premise, ‘Gunda’ follows the daily life of a pig named Gunda and its farm animal companions–two cows and a one-legged chicken. Utilizing stark black-and-white cinematography, ‘Gunda’ is an otherworldly meditation on the animal consciousness that’s surprisingly immersive and compelling.

‘Monday’

Sebastian Stan currently stars as Bucky in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’.

‘Mortal Kombat’

‘About Endlessness’

Difficult to succinctly describe, ‘About Endlessness’ is a reflection of the full human experience. Dreamlike sequences guided by a winding narrator follow inconsequential moments and historical events alike–we see a couple floating over the war-torn rubble of Cologne, a father stopping to tie his daughter’s shoelaces in the rain, teenage girls dancing outside a cafe, and a defeated army marching to a POW camp. 

‘Golden Arm’

‘Golden Arm’ is a comedy that follows Melanie (Holland), a friendly baker who’s coaxed by her best friend Danny (Sodaro) into taking her spot at the Women’s Arm Wrestling Championship.

Their trip doesn’t go as planned, however, when the world’s electronic devices come to life and revolt.

‘Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse’ serves as the origin story of action hero John Clark (Jordan), Clancy’s second most famous character after Jack Ryan (previously portrayed by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, Chris Pine, and John Krasinski). ‘Without Remorse’ follows Clark as he avenges the murder of his family, uncovering an even greater plot that could ignite an all-out war between Russia and the U.S.

Michael B. Jordan is set to debut as a director with ‘Creed 3’, expected to be released in 2022.
