The world was able to come together in shared joy for one day, and that day was when it was announced Akiva Schaffer and Andy Samberg, two out of three of the famous comedy trio The Lonely Island, along with John Mulaney will be adapting the widely acclaimed classic cartoon series ‘Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers’,  where Chip ‘n’ Dale lead their own detective agency. This news essentially seals the fact that it will be comedy gold, as the three spearheading the project are ‘Saturday Night Live’ alumni, and have had remarkable comedy careers aside from SNL.

Disney said their reimagining will be a “meta-take” on the film. The fact that it’s meta will be exceptionally interesting. The self-referential and cool new revival technique has been a leitmotif in Disney’s classic revivals, but their keen instincts for the best creative talent to spearhead those projects always culminates in a high-quality product that’s at least entertaining, and sometimes even mesmerizing. John Mulaney will be voicing Chip, and Andy Samberg is going to be voicing Dale. It’s exciting to think of the novel approaches the two comedians will be taking on the beloved characters with such a far-reaching audience. Under Schaffer’s liege, their original and stylistic takes on the characters are sure to impress nonetheless.

The success of the four Jason Lee lead ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ movies from 2007 to 2015 proved that there’s still an unbreakable robust demand for squirrelly-type movies, and there’s a reliable market for stories like these. This film has been long-awaited, and is speculated to be a CG animation hybrid. The writer from ‘How I Met Your Mother’ and ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’, Dan Gregor, and his writing partner Doug Mand, who also worked on the screenplay for Robert Downey Jr’s ‘Dolittle’,  will be writing the script for Akiva Schaffer to bring to life. David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman, the iconic producers behind ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘The Muppets’, will be assuming the producer roles on this project too, with Alexander Young from films ‘Extinction’ and ‘Life As We Know It’ as the executive producer. It’s a recipe for success that everyone can agree will be one of the most anticipated movies of 2022, and based on the remarkable resumes of all the creative forces behind the film, which features Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy winners, it’s going to be a phenomenal film.

The Creative Power Behind the Revival of the Acclaimed Classic

The original series, titled ‘Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers’, lasted from 1988-1990. It featured voice talent from the ‘Transformers’ franchise Peter Cullen, ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘AnimaniacsTress MacNeille, ‘Hercules’ and ‘Atlantis: The Lost Empire’s Corey Burton – who will also be returning to voice Zipper for the remake – and ‘The Princess and the Frog’ and ‘Christopher Robin’s Jim Cummings. With the sensational repertoire of talent from the original, along with the enormous fan-base of ‘Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers’, the question for the creators of the film will be how to efficiently follow such a hard act.

But Disney’s eye for talent seldom disappoints, and the energy Akiva Schaffer and Andy Samberg bring will set the story at new heights, with the electric wit and brilliance of John Mulaney to push the film over the edge. Akiva Schaffer directed many of The Lonely Island’s music videos, which are undeniably super well-directed, along with hilarious, and have garnered over a billion views since their introduction to the world in 2005 through ‘Saturday Night Live’, and their music video for their hit song ‘Lazy Sunday’ brought them international fame. Schaffer also directed ‘Hot Rod’, starring Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone that came out in 2007. He also directed the star-studded comedy film ‘The Watch’ in 2012, starring Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, and Jonah Hill. ‘Popstar’, one of the most underrated comedies of all time, is also on Schaffer’s director resume, which he co-directed with Jorma Taccone. The most recent on Schaffer’s resume was the acclaimed ‘I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson’ and ‘The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience’. It’s clear that Schaffer is a visionary, a comedy virtuoso, and overall, a brilliant director.

Both Andy Samberg and John Mulaney have voiceover experience, with Samberg in the four ‘Hotel Transylvania’ movies and ‘Storks’, and Mulaney in ‘Big Mouth’ and Sony’s ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, along with its own spinoff short ‘Spider-Ham: Caught in a Ham’. Both of the comedians have reached a phase in their career where they’ve truly become seasoned masters of their craft, and with all their experience in animation and voiceover work, their performances are guaranteed to be incredible.
