When you think of reality television in America, what first comes to your mind? Do you think of ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’ or maybe ‘Jersey Shore? Reality television has become a staple in American television, and we are constantly seeing more and more types and different reality television series that continually shape what we know and understand as reality television.
When I think of reality television, I think of all of the above, but I especially think about the ‘Real Housewives’ franchise produced by Andy Cohen. Along with other people, I fell into watching ‘Real Housewives’ when stumbling across one of the series within the franchise while scrolling through Hulu one day.
I, among many others, was instantly hooked on the television franchise as I watched and realized the women on all of these series are completely bold and willing to share every single aspect of their life, which can also be troubling at times; I might add. The ‘Real Housewives’ franchise has become a top competitor in reality television, running for a variety of reasons, but here’s some to consider.
Different Cities and Stars
The ‘Real Housewives’ franchise has become extremely popular because the different series do not offer one simple storyline crammed into one season, but rather fans can watch new seasons of all of the series featuring women from all different cities in one sitting if they would like. As of right now, fans of the ‘Real Housewives’ franchise are able to watch upper-class housewives in eleven different cities in the United States.
As someone who has checked out the majority of the franchise, it is definitely clear that each series within the franchise stars women that are all different in their own ways, usually reflecting the city the show is filmed in. Just the vast amount of series within the franchise is sometimes enough to catch viewers’ attention as there is never a moment where fans have to miss out on anything with there being so much content already out at any given time.
It is no secret that people, including myself, take an interest in what some of the wealthiest American people’s lives look like behind the scenes of social media posts and newspaper articles. This kind of explains why the different ‘Real Housewives’ series have grown such a large following over the years, with more and more seasons being released and more cities joining the franchise.
The ladies of the ‘Real Housewives’ franchise share almost everything about their lives, but they especially share every detail about the luxuries they keep up with, such as their large homes, cars, shopping sprees, fancy vacations, and much more. The ‘Real Housewives’ franchise is different from other reality television series because the women that join the casts of the different series truly are not shy about sharing what it takes to have their lifestyles and the outcomes.
The ‘Real Housewives’ Share Everything
With any reality television series, viewers are expecting to see every single detail about the stars’ lives, and this is almost always true for the women within the ‘Real Housewives’ franchise. Of course, there are definitely things we don’t see, but for the most part, viewers see every detail, whether it’s good or bad, including divorce, custody battles, bankruptcies, substance abuse, and more: they don’t hold back anything.
Reality television is often criticized for the front that it may put up, often giving off unrealistic expectations and ideas about life to the viewers who are watching. I think the ‘Real Housewives’ franchise does not always give off these unrealistic expectations, though, and can actually provide solace to viewers who are watching and can relate to some of the struggles that many of the housewives often go through in front of the spotlight.
Bring on the Drama
As I mentioned before, the ‘Real Housewives’ stars truly do bare all for the camera, and that includes all of the drama that happens within the group of ladies and husbands occasionally; in each series, after all, it is reality television. At any given time during each of the series, there are glasses being thrown, drinks being thrown at people, screaming matches and guess what? For the most part, all of this drama is actually real.
The ‘Real Housewives’ franchise is not scripted, although the producers at some points might stir up drama in their own ways. What viewers see is often exactly what is happening at that moment, so when you see one of the housewives screaming in another housewives’ face at a classy restaurant or party, it is most certainly real. Those bystanders are probably thinking what we are thinking while watching it on the television screen: what the heck is going on.
As time passes, the ‘Real Housewives’ franchise continues to grow and thrive, with more cities joining the lineup every year and did I mention the franchise has gone international as well? I have no doubt the series will grow as much as it wants to, and viewers will continue to watch for years to come.
The ‘Real Housewives’ franchise has genuinely taken over what America knows as reality television because of the unscripted drama, luxurious lifestyles, and more that it provides, keeping viewers hooked on the screen. Andy Cohen has truly nailed down what reality television means for America, and I can not wait to see what city comes next to the franchise.
If you’re someone that finds reality television a little bit silly or overdone, I encourage you to check out ‘Real Housewives’ because there really is never a dull moment or boring scene when watching any of the series from the franchise. While I wait for more cities to join the line up, I will continue to watch all my favorite series from the franchise and hope that some of my favorite original housewives will one day make an appearance again.
