The 95th Academy Awards is finally arriving and has released their nomination list for all categories. On March 12, 2023, fans of Cinema will get to see which films from the riveting 2022 season will leave the Dolby Theatre with an Oscar. Some teams may be leaving with multiple Oscars, as this year’s nomination list is filled with strong candidates that have large cultural impact leading to nominations in many categories.

Leading the 2023 Oscars with 11 nominations is ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. The reality-bending multiverse picture was suspected to be up for Best Picture since its early release of March 11, 2022. Since release, ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ fans deny the existence of any film surpassing the quality, creativeness, and originality of anything else released in 2022, and it holds the highest odds of winning the top award of the night. Following The Daniels’s film, the German World War I epic, ‘All Quiet on the Western Front,’ and the dark comedy Irish film, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ each earned nine nominations for the 95th Academy Awards.

The Stacked Lineup for Best Picture

The three leading films found themselves in the top category of the night, Best Picture. Although ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ holds the highest odds of winning, there is plenty of room for an upset as the candidates for this year’s Best Picture is the strongest pool of the decade so far. The sequel that took 13 years to release, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water,’ is also up for the prestigious award. Being the sixth highest-grossing film of all time and the only film to gross over $2 billion since 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ it has the popularity contest in the bag. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ joins the James Cameron sequel on the roster of action-film sequels to be nominated in the category.

Based on a true story and written and directed by Sarah Polley, ‘Women Talking’ secured a spot on the list with its powerful subject matter against injustice. The ‘Elvis’ musical biopic featuring Golden Globe winner Austin Butler also made the list. Butler won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture and also earned himself a nomination for Best Actor for the Oscars. Winner of the 2022 Palme d’Or (the highest award granted at the Cannes Film Festival), ‘Triangle of Sadness,’ becomes another satirical comedy narrating the horrors of the privileged and wealthy. ‘The Fablemans,’ directed by Steven Spielberg, who now has the highest total earnings in the worldwide box office with over $10 billion, adds to Spielberg’s long collection of Best Picture and Best Director nominations. Lastly, ‘Tár’ lands a spot on the Best Picture nomination list while giving Cate Blanchett another shot to take home the Oscar for Best Actress.

Viola Davis, ‘Decision to Leave,’ and Other Snubs

For an action-heavy nomination list, it was a shock to see Academy favorite, Viola Davis, earning zero nominations for her fantastic work as the fiercely brave Nanisca in ‘The Woman King.’ In a not-so-surprising snub, the Academy Awards failed to acknowledge the birth and uprising of new scream queen Mia Goth. With her work on ‘X’ and more notably ‘Pearl’ (prequel of ‘X’ that was released the same year), it was a hope for horror fans that Mia Goth would earn some nod in the award show this year, but the Academy Awards does have a tendency to neglect horror films. However, it was a tough year to make it on the 20-actor nomination list as this year was some of the best pieces of Cinema that was released. Florence Pugh failed to make it on the nomination list as well for her performance in ‘Don’t Worry Darling.’ Paul Dano lacked a nomination for his work on ‘The Fablemans.’ Doja Cat was snubbed from what is thought to be an unjust ineligibility for her original song ‘Vegas,’ which was a long-standing chart topper on the Hot 100 and is still charting after 29 weeks. ‘Vegas’ earned Doja Cat a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance.

With the reign of South Korean films in the recent Oscars, it is hard to believe the outrageous snub of ‘Decision to Leave’ was legit. Let alone it did not make Best Picture, but it did not make it to the International Feature Film nomination list, which seemed strange to international film fanatics as it was truly a profound work of art. ‘Nope,’ by film genius Jordan Peele, disappointingly yet not-surprisingly did not score a single nomination. The extraterrestrial horror mystery was expected to at least score a nomination in Best Sound.

Many Firsts for 2023 Oscar Nominations

This year’s list provided many surprising firsts for longtime Hollywood stars and some new talent as well. Within the 11 nominations that ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ scored, Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu, and Ke Huy Quan all earned their first Oscar nomination. Michelle Yeoh earned her first Golden Globe for Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture at the 80th Golden Globes held in January of 2023. Ke Huy Quan also won his first Golden Globe for his supporting role in the same picture. Jamie Lee Curtis was nominated for her supporting role in the film but ultimately lost the award to Angela Bassett, who made history as the first ever actor to win a Golden Globe for Marvel Studios. Angela Bassett finds herself in the Oscar nominations for Actress in a Supporting Role alongside Jamie Lee Curtis (‘EEAAO’) and Stephanie Hsu (‘EEAAO’), making her the first actor from a Marvel film to be nominated for an Oscar for her work as Queen Ramonda in ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.’

16 out of the 20 nominations in the acting categories for the 2023 Academy Awards were given to first-time nominees. All five nominees in the Best Actor in a Leading Role are first time nominees: Austin Butler (‘Elvis’), Colin Farrell (‘The Banshees of Inisherin’), Brendan Fraser (‘The Whale’), Paul Mescal (‘Aftersun’), and Bill Nighy (‘Living’). The other amazing actors to earn their first Oscar nomination are Hong Chau (‘The Whale’), Kerry Condon (‘The Banshees of Inisherin’), Ana de Armas (‘Blonde’), Brendan Gleeson (‘The Banshees of Inisherin’), Brian Tyree Henry (‘Causeway’), Barry Keoghan (‘The Banshees of Inisherin’), and Andrea Riseborough (‘To Leslie’). Outside of the acting categories, Rihanna also earns her first Oscar nomination for her original song ‘Lift Me Up’ that was composed for ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ and marked her comeback to music since her 2016 album ‘Anti.’

Click here to read The Hollywood Insider’s CEO Pritan Ambroase’s love letter to Cinema, TV and Media. An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.
