The Hollywood Insider Dating & New York Review

Is romance still real and alive in today’s world full of social media likes, dating apps, and the desire to always have something new? ‘Dating & New York’ answers this question in its own way by fictionally pairing up two millennials Wendy (Francesca Reale) and Milo (Jaboukie Young-White) who meet on a dating app in New York ultimately leading to a successful one-night stand. ‘Dating & New York’ will be writer-director Jonah Feingold’s feature film debut, and I think he absolutely nailed what the future of modern romantic comedies will look like.

New York is a magical place that people constantly dream of visiting for a variety of reasons, but one of those reasons may be the absolute picture-perfect scenery of Fall in New York. ‘Dating & New York’ features scenes of Fall in New York, which really just adds to the romance side of the film for me and provides that warm and cozy feeling we all hope for when watching a romantic comedy. With Fall approaching at the end of this month, ‘Dating & New York’ could not come at a better time with its theater release date on September 10.

Dating App Struggles

It is no secret that dating apps have become the modern-day dating scene for people of all ages, and it is also no secret that dating apps are pretty much the worst; for the most part, well, more people on dating apps, not the apps themselves. ‘Dating & New York’ challenges this viewpoint and ultimately presents the idea that people can find love through dating apps even if it doesn’t really work out at first. Milo and Wendy meet through the dating app and ultimately have a one-night stand and seemingly leave, expecting never to see each other again.

The streets of New York aren’t so big after all because the two find each other again, which leads to them creating a sort of friends-with-benefits contract that bans all emotions and embraces all of the benefits of a relationship. After being burned by failed past relationships Wendy and Milo think this is the best option for them. Still, little do they know someone definitely is going to catch feelings in the friends-with-benefits relationship. Throughout the trailer, it is evident that Jonah Feingold decided to go against the typical gender norms we see in romantic comedies. Instead, Milo is the one who grows emotionally attached to Wendy way faster than she does.

Will Wendy reciprocate the feelings?

Of course, in the beginning, they do follow through with their contract, which brings in the comedy as we watch Wendy and Milo deal with the not-so-good side of dating apps and dating in general, which is always bound to bring the laughter. It isn’t long until their bond grows stronger and everyone around them, like Cole, the doorman (Jerry Ferrara), starts to question and notice that they are acting more like a couple rather than people who aren’t supposed to share an emotional connection. It is a romantic comedy after all, so what else could we expect and really, I am kind of hoping that they end up married with children anyway.

Sadly, the trailer doesn’t offer that much information, so I will just have to wait until the movie comes out to see the end-game for Wendy and Milo. Will Wendy finally realize how in love she is with Milo, or will she turn him away, hurt by her past relationships? Or will Milo give up on his passion for Wendy and find someone else, leaving Wendy wishing she would have said she was in love too? We will have to wait to find out.

A Relatable Romantic-Comedies

Romantic comedies often get a bad reputation for their unrealistic views on romance and life in general. Still, I think ‘Dating & New York’ really does deserve recognition for its more realistic and modern approach to romance. What’s more relatable to people than dating app struggles, weird friends-with-benefits relationships, and overall the awkwardness of dating in today’s society? It’s genuinely refreshing to be able to watch a movie and kind of relate to the characters’ struggles throughout, but also, I do still love a cheesy film here and there.

Don’t get me wrong, ‘Dating & New York’ will definitely be providing us romantic-comedy lovers with all the feels, but in a more realistic and relatable way. I am excited to watch Wendy and Milo try to navigate the fails of dating because it might quite possibly be the most relatable part. In the trailer, we see Wendy telling a date that he lied about his height, and we also see Milo get called out for constantly being ghosted by other people, so basically, things we hear from our friends every day.

‘Dating & New York’ is Modern-Day Dating

Viewers will be getting a glimpse into either their own lives or lives they used to live while watching ‘Dating & New York’, which is why I think the film will really be successful, especially in audiences that have decided to take on dating apps in real life. I can’t wait to see the rest of the story in theaters and can only imagine the trailer only shows a small glimpse of what is to come from ‘Dating & New York.’ In the meantime, I’ll be wishing I was in New York to watch the leaves turn colors, but probably not wishing for all of the struggles that come with dating.
