Say goodbye to missing the new episode of your favorite show. DVR? No way… streaming service. It’s incredible to see in the past five years the absolute take over the streaming services have done in film and television. Network TV still holds some gems, but mostly the daytime/nighttime talk shows and the news. It seems that now everyone is coming out with their own streaming service. The more content options the better, but it can be daunting to figure out which is the best for your viewing preferences.
This list will go through some of the more popular services and help the hard decision of choosing which ones to subscribe to in the upcoming year. Subscriptions can easily be forgotten about so this will make sure that you will get as much use out of your money.
People are now quick to turn their heads when hearing someone doesn’t have Netflix. This is by far the most popular streaming service and has definitely been the pioneer in the original content in streaming services. Netflix offers a wide variety of films and television, but what makes Netflix different than others is the speed of new content. Every day there is a new film or tv show being added, whether it be a classic that you love or another Netflix Original. Some originals that have taken over social media were ‘Squid Game’ and ‘The Queen’s Gambit’. If you are also a fan of comedy, this service offers many stand-up specials that range from family-friendly to downright dirty.
This streaming service is for the one that wants to keep up with what’s trending and binge the latest series.
Hulu
Hulu has been neck and neck in the streaming service game with Netflix for a while but still is seen as underrated with their content. What makes Hulu different from the rest is the amount of network television that is present. Whether it’s adult animations or reality TV, Hulu holds the bulk of the content. They also have deals with network TV so after the premiere of the show on TV, it will then get added to Hulu. If you are a sports fan, Hulu is definitely the place to go with a relationship to ESPN. It also holds a lot of original content that has taken the world by storm like ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and ‘Killing Eve’.
This streaming service is for the one that loves network television and doesn’t want to let it go yet.
HBO Max is in my book the best streaming service out there. They have a huge library of films that range from films that would be shown in film history classes to the latest 2021 releases. What makes them different is their partnership with studios for theater releases, but also a streaming premiere. For example, the upcoming film ‘The Matrix Ressurections’ is being played in theaters and on HBO Max for a limited amount of time. This gives access to the people that either don’t have the time to go to the theater, but also aren’t able to go anymore. HBO Max, like always, has phenomenal original content from ‘The Sopranos’ to ‘Euphoria’.
This streaming service is for the cinephiles; the ones that want to watch the latest releases and rewatch the classics.
Disney+
It’s quite obvious what would be present on Disney+, but there is so much more! Other than almost every single Disney film that has ever been made, but there is a collection of Pixar films as well. Not stopping there, it’s easy to forget that Disney owns the Marvel franchise which means the latest and greatest Marvel films are on there. It’s difficult to fully embrace the Marvel Universe without this service that housed fantastic originals like ‘Wanda Vision’ and the upcoming ‘Hawkeye‘. The other underrated part of Disney+ is their partnership with National Geographic. Phenomenal Earth and animal shows are able to stream at any time!
This streaming service is for the kid at heart who wants to experience their childhood favorites again.
During the holiday season, Amazon Prime is a common thing for shopping and cyber Monday. What people forget about their Prime subscription is the access to hundreds of great films and TV shows. Amazon is known for having everything, and they certainly prove it with their Prime video. With Amazon Prime, there is a variety of content to watch for free, but there is always an option to stream movies for a small fee that aren’t on other services. What this service has is greatly underrated original content that slips under the radar. Some shows that were able to shine through are ‘Fleabag’ and ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’. There have also been some fantastic original films that have been released like ‘The Sound of Metal’ and the latest ‘Being The Ricardos’.
This streaming service is for the one that keeps up with award shows and makes sure to watch all of the nominees before the big day.
This streaming service is not for the light-hearted. Shudder is a streaming service that is devoted to the horror and thriller genre. I felt it necessary to mention it because of the niche category of horror that is so easily forgotten about in other streaming services. Having an entire subscription towards the gore and scares is perfect for the people that can’t get enough. What makes this service different from others is the addition of their Shudder TV right on the app there is an option to watch their channel which is a constant stream of films and TV. This gives the nostalgic feeling of starting a movie in the middle of it and figuring out what is happening.
This streaming service is for horror addicts and thrill-seekers that just can’t get enough.

It’s easy to get caught up in the latest and greatest thing, but hopefully, this list is a guide for the people struggling to choose which streaming service is best for them. There is a lot more to come with streaming services such as Apple TV, Tubi, Peacock, Discovery Plus, and most likely many more in the coming year.
