‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’ – In Netflix’s Top 10 Films on Release Day

Ranking at number 9 of Netflix’s top 10 streaming shows in the U.S ‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’ on the day of its release. This less than 90-minute animation brings viewers into the world of monsters, elves, and witches. Following the story of Vesemir (Theo James), a witcher who escaped poverty from a young age to become a monster slayer. In an exciting opening scene that leads to the introduction of Vesemir, his cockiness and humor grip viewers wanting them to know more about him. As forest monsters threaten a nearby town, the witcher’s protect the civilians all while fighting for their existence. Directed by Kwang II Han, they do a great job of bringing this story to life.

In my personal experience, anime is not a genre I am all too familiar with which has always made me hesitant to watch new films. This was a great introduction to the world of anime while also broadening my comfort zone of cinema. A great thing about this film is the inviting world that is created. There is no prior knowledge needed to understand the fantasy world that these characters live in. No essential lore has to be known to interpret the film and it cuts straight to the chase with the plot. An overall enjoyable watch and a great choice for a person looking to expand their horizons.

Adult Animation

As the opening credits play so does the mature rating of the film. For violence, language, nudity, but most importantly gore. Comparing an animated film to a live-action film shows how limited live-action can be. If this film were to be considered to be live-action it would need the best of the best for the cleaning crew. With fight after fight, the gore is non-stop throughout the film. If it is a person’s first time watching an animation like this it could be shocking to see. Many people’s only interaction with adult animation is either a Disney movie or ‘The Simpsons’. This film is definitely for adult’s eyes only because of the haunting drawn images that could be just too much for some people.

Other than the violence and gore present throughout the film, it is rare to watch any type of adult animation. With the dying art of two-dimensional animation, fewer and fewer films choose to go with the medium. With network television shows like ‘American Dad’ and ‘Family Guy’ the need for 2D seems to stop there for most adults. Diving back into the world of animation could be a nice break from the all too realistic effects that films and shows have perfected.

Social Commentary

Though the world they are in is filled with magical beings there is a strong presence of social commentary throughout. Every day is a battle filled with people who think they are better than everyone else. In this fantasy world. Elves and witches butt heads with the witchers. Since the film is short not every detail is gone over of why this world came to be but the concept of different groups against each other is nothing far from history. An unnecessary shed of blood and fighting for a peaceful existence.

In the modern world today, seeing someone act or look different from what you are used to can still be seen as a threat sadly. Though hopefully, the world is getting more accepted and tolerant of different people, there is still a strong sense of xenophobia, racism, homophobia, and misogyny present. Watching this film helps the unconscious part of the brain seep the ability to find acceptance between each other. Even in the world of magic and superpowers, a society with prejudices will always fail.

‘The Witcher’ TV Series

‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’ is supposedly taken place in an already established world of lore. Another Netflix original is the live-action series ‘The Witcher’. This animation is set in the times before the series. With a similar plotline of following a witcher as he destroys monsters in a magic world, the animated film can create and be a prequel to the series. ‘The Witcher’ was released on Netflix in 2019 and stars Henry Cavill, Anna Shaffer, and Freya Allan. Though I have not dived into the series yet, the animated film was a great introduction to the world I would be entering. The series is expected to be much less gory, but still with exciting fight scenes and more time to dive into the character’s stories.

Both the series and anime are based on The Witcher saga written by Andrzej Sapkowski. With a total of six novels and fifteen short stories about The Witcher, the polish author had his books translated into 37 different languages! This bestseller has now turned into a fantasy must-watch.

WRAP UP

Breaking out of your comfort zone can completely change your views on a subject matter. Personally, I never thought to watch anime purely on stereotypes, but I am so glad that I watched this. An open door to a fantasy world of great storytelling, tense battle scenes, and connecting with characters. ‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’ is a wonderful introduction to The Witcher book series and will make you want to binge-watch ‘The Witcher’ right after!
