M. Night Shyamalan is a director whose career has been recognized for making mind-blowing thrillers that either scare or move their audiences. Even though he made some different career choices, he has been known to make audiences spooked and amazed at his works.

The director was born on August 6, 1970, in Puducherry, India. He was raised by Nelliate C. and Jayalakshmi Shyamalan. They moved to the United States as soon as his older sister, Veena, was born living in the suburban side of Philadelphia. During his childhood, M. Night experimented with filmmaking by using an 8-mm camera. He made as many home movies as he could, around 45 of them. If any fan is curious enough to watch his humble beginnings, they can check on some of his theatrically released films on DVD and/or Blu-ray to find them on the special features menu. Fans can also watch his home movies on YouTube. As a young man, he attended New York University to receive his education in film school. At the university, he made his first full-length film called ‘Praying with Anger’ in 1992. It was an essential project for M. Night since it dealt with M. Night playing an Indian protagonist teenager who lived as an American. He is sent back to India, where he discovers his roots and the differences between his birthplace and America. It was a debut that moved audiences and gave him the opportunity to direct other films.

Shyamalan directed his second feature and comedy-drama, ‘Wide Awake’ (1998), which told the story of a 10-year-old boy who seeks a relationship with God after the death of his grandfather. The film didn’t perform very well at the box office and was not well-received by film critics. Regardless, he was diligent enough to continue to write screenplays that would someday be his feature films. He had found success selling his script for the hit 1999 family film, ‘Stuart Little,’ an adaptation of E.B White’s children’s book that tells the story of a mouse who befriends a boy and becomes part of his family. Though he might not have directed ‘Stuart Little,’ he instead directed a hit of his own in the same year, which made him famous and defined his career. It was a supernatural thriller called ‘The Sixth Sense.’

‘The Sixth Sense’ and Beyond

‘The Sixth Sense’ tells a story about a boy (Haley Joel Osment) who talks to a psychologist (Bruce Willis) about his ability to see and speak to the dead. The film spooked and thrilled a lot of its audiences. It gave recognition to Bruce Willis as a serious actor going beyond his action-based roles. The film performed well at the box office and grossed $670 million worldwide. The film also received Oscar recognition and was nominated six times, including for Best Picture and for M. Night’s original screenplay. The movie was so successful that the famous quote “I see dead people” (said by Haley Joel Osment’s character) has been spoofed by many other comedic movies, such as Scary Movie.

The following year, he made ‘Unbreakable’ (2000). It is a sci-fi, drama, and mystery film in which a trainwreck survivor (Bruce Willis), who had not suffered any injuries of any kind, discovers that he has special powers.  Two years later, M. Night released ‘Signs’ (2002), a sci-fi thriller about a retired reverend (Mel Gibson) who lives with his children and his brother (Joaquin Phoenix) on a farm, experiencing an alien invasion. The film became another favorite for his fans. The Wayans Brothers once again even used his work as a spoof for their movie, ‘Scary Movie 3.’

In 2004, M. Night released ‘The Village,’ a story about a secret community that guards itself against unknown creatures in the woods. Two years later, he directed ‘Lady in the Water’ (2006), which starred Paul Giamatti as the superintendent of a condominium who rescues what he believes is a young woman from the swimming pool. He quickly finds out that she is actually a character from a bedtime story who plans on making her way back home. The film also stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Jeffrey Wright. Two years later, he made ‘The Happening’, which became a low-maintenance thriller in 2008. It tells the story of a science teacher (Mark Wahlberg) who helps his wife and a young girl survive a plague that causes the infected victims to commit suicide. In 2010, M. Night took it upon himself to direct ‘The Last Airbender,’ an adaptation of the hit Nickelodeon animated series ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender.’ The film was poorly reviewed and widely considered the weakest film of M. Night Shyamalan. Other sequels were planned, but were canceled after the film’s negative feedback from both film critics and moviegoers.

Around the mid-2010s, M. Night Shyamalan received favorable praise from his audiences after making ‘The Visit’ in 2015. The following year, he made the successful psychological horror film, ‘Split.’ The story centers on a man with dissociative identity disorder (James McAvoy) who kidnaps and imprisons three teenage girls in an unknown underground lair. The movie was famous for revealing itself to be a surprise sequel to his 2000 film ‘Unbreakable. Three years later, he released his second ‘Unbreakable’ sequel, ‘Glass.’ In 2021, he released ‘Old,’ a sci-fi thriller that focuses on a group of vacationers who discover themselves aging rapidly on a strange beach. His newest movie, ‘Trap’, is set to be released on August 9th, 2024.

In Conclusion

M. Night Shyamalan may have made some questionable films to fans and critics. However, it has not stopped him from making mind-blowing and frightening films for his fans and average moviegoers. Cinephiles will appreciate his tactics of making innovative thrillers that will always end with surprise twists and his occasional cameos in his own stories.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, “We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
