K-Pop stans and TikTok thwart social racism and bigotry better than anyone ever has.

Everyone can appreciate a good troll, especially for an even better cause. Unfortunately last month, a trend for “White Out Wednesday” started on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter as a means for Republicans to support white supremacy. The hashtag, “#whitelivesmatter” was subsequently flushed with Korean Pop Music idols, overwhelming the hashtag to prevent anti-Black posts from seeing the light of day. Instead, Twitter recognized the trend in the“K-Pop” category. K-Pop megafans successfully derailed a racist campaign on several occasions, also spamming superstar “fan cams” into a police app meant to apprehend protesters. While actions have been taken in the past to combat racist social media and law enforcement traps, the K-Pop fandom method feels more effective.

Democrats tend to be bad at drowning out this sort of content because they feed into it. Well-meaning Americans often allow racists to control the language around racism. Racists take “Black Lives Matter” and deflect the frame, which forces everyone else to talk about how heinous “blue lives matter” and “all lives matter” are. “All lives matter” becomes a crucial part of the argument if they say it, and it doesn’t matter how many times we refute the claim because we still use the phrase and spread it around. We give power to ideas that don’t deserve it. Instead, it seems the best practice is to distract all together. Without giving any power to the movement, K-Pop videos took all attention away from the racism. It never had to be about outsmarting racism or demoralizing it because racism is already dumb and amoral. The lesson here is to stick to your own message and avoid feeding into damaging ones.

Why TikTok and K-Pop Stans are important to the message

It’s always good to see Trump outsmarted and racism shot down. It’s better when we characterize the group responsible as a bunch of kids. Teenagers have always been in the spotlight for change, as schools across the country lose funding while other funds like that of the US military thrive. In spite of poor public funding for schools, we always expect the most change to occur in schools first. Schools have some of our best social welfare. Schools are where we tackled segregation the hardest. Schools are what we want to think of as the great equalizer. Teenagers, therefore, have a place in U.S. Politics that adults never will because most of the time, they are affected the most. Most high schoolers are expected to demonstrate the outcomes of U.S. politics without having a say or vote in them. In the last two years, we’ve seen students lead the way on gun control and on climate change.

The image of kids defeating racist actions and putting a stop to Trump assertions is fulfilling. TikTok is the new thing. A younger base means social progressives can stay ahead if held to a message instead of being derailed. A student body is more mobile than any adult organization. Most importantly, kids are always underestimated. They are seen as naive, dumb, flawed, and incapable. When an organized movement of incapable young people can activate successfully against the most powerful people of the world, we get to fall in love with a new David and Goliath story. It was the same in 1899 when the newsboys went on strike, and the public could rally behind them. Kids who exercise efficacy can promote change, and they are often more promising than any adult effort.

What do we learn from prankster teens also known as K-Pop Stans?

Liberal Americans have to learn that teens have valuable input. There also has to be a commitment to issues. When we don’t take Black candidates seriously, we risk losing a big portion of these young future voters. Their attention is split because their issues aren’t taken seriously. If we opt for actual progressive change, we earn young trust. We make differences to keep a voting base unified. Too often, Democrats opt to keep the status quo over progressive change. There is a notion that Democrats need to concede change to make progress. In actuality, Republicans win every time we put in a status quo Democrat. As Democrats move right for their older voters, younger voters lose support and resources. We can expect them to pay that loss forward.

In reality, we need to take the needs and wants of a diversifying young voter base seriously. When kids are saying they don’t want guns in their schools anymore, we should listen to them. We shouldn’t concede guns because we need to get the middle of the road voters. We’re losing our ground with left voters. The best bet is to reach out to teens and children and understand what they want their future to look like. Instead, there’s too much worry over what racists and bigots think of liberals and progressives. The wrong votes are being fought for, and to me, it seems like we’ll see that mentality reflected every November.

Progressive voters keep coming into the voting base at age 18, and they walk right out of the Democrat corner, looking for something that works better for all people. If Democrats are desperate, they need to consider what people need from them. JFK famously said in his Inaugural Address, “ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” He then proceeded to lead “ask not” Americans into a failed invasion and a worse war. We deserve to expect better from our country. I think a more poignant sound bite would have been, “Judge not the actions you cannot affect; Affect the actions for which you are judged.” These words symbolize the lessons we teach children without personal fidelity.

An excerpt from the love letter: Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, “Hollywood Insider fully supports the much-needed Black Lives Matter movement. We are actively, physically and digitally a part of this global movement. We will continue reporting on this major issue of police brutality and legal murders of Black people to hold the system accountable. We will continue reporting on this major issue with kindness and respect to all Black people, as each and every one of them are seen and heard. Just a reminder, that the Black Lives Matter movement is about more than just police brutality and extends into banking, housing, education, medical, infrastructure, etc. We have the space and time for all your stories. We believe in peaceful/non-violent protests and I would like to request the rest of media to focus on 95% of the protests that are peaceful and working effectively with positive changes happening daily. Media has a responsibility to better the world and Hollywood Insider will continue to do so.”
