Hollywood Insider Marvel Cinematic Universe Success

The Marvel Cinematic Universe began when Tony Stark looked out at the eyes of America and said three iconic words: “I am Iron Man.” Since then, the MCU has amassed billions of fans worldwide and has introduced what feels like hundreds of characters with complicated backstories and superpowers. It feels like just Captain America’s story can fill up one of those huge encyclopedias no one would dare touch at the library. And yet people keep coming back. The MCU rakes in half a billion with one movie and has a huge legion of dedicated fans. While other movie universes seem to barely be able to stay afloat or even struggle to get off the ground, the MCU is riding high. Universal’s Dark Universe is already dead in the water, the DC Extended Universe is barely getting by and M Night Shyamalan’s admittedly promising film universe has only released three films. How is the MCU able to keep and maintain such a loyal fan base who would probably be willing to give a blood sacrifice to sit in the back row of the next Thor movie?

Utilizing Hollywood’s Star System to the Fullest Extent

I used to be super cynical about the MCU. Before I had actually sat down and watched one of the movies, I thought every one of their movies was just a bunch of buff, hot guys causing massive explosions to save the world and rinse and repeat. Then, one of my favorite actors was cast as Doctor Strange. I am a confessed Cumberb*tch. After dramatically ranting to my fellow Benedict Cumberbatch fans about how a man of such talent like him could possibly stoop low enough to accept a role in the MCU. He played Hamlet for crying out loud! Finally, I decided to suck up my pride and watch Doctor Strange. And…. It was a really good movie. I went back to check out the other MCU movies I was too stubborn to see before and they were all genuinely good. There was heart, romance, and bromances. What more could a movie need?

I now realize the cleverness behind the MCU using such huge stars in their movies. If Cumberbatch was never cast as Doctor Strange, I would have never given the MCU a chance. Scarlett Johanssen was in more realistic movies before taking her turn as Black Widow. Chadwick Boseman was never in anything like Black Panther before taking on the role. Marvel takes actors with fans who wouldn’t normally be into MCU type movies. In doing so, they amass a giant fanbase they wouldn’t otherwise have had.

The Uniting Factor Between Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies- The Infinity Stones

A major part of what roped me into the MCU was the Infinity Stones. These objects are simple enough to understand and yet they were shrouded in mystery. The first appearance of an Infinity Stone was in Captain America: The First Avenger. The Tesseract containing the Space Stone was used to create weapons for Hydra. There are six all-powerful Infinity Stones: the Space Stone, the Time Stone, the Reality Stone, the Soul Stone, the Power Stone, and the Mind Stone. These stones are incredibly fascinating to follow and track through different movies. Before Infinity War, they united the movies and gave the fans a pay-off to look forward to. Then once Infinity War and Endgame came, the fans felt satisfaction in seeing the Infinity Stones used to their fullest extent.

You can’t take yourself too seriously! The DCEU, Universal’s Dark Universe, they all have this problem with letting a bit of humor into their movies. We don’t need to constantly be making Deadpool-esque movies but don’t let it all be doom and gloom. The MCU masterfully allows humor into their movies without glazing over emotional weight. Even though the Avengers were fighting to bring half the human race back in Endgame, when Hulk explains how time travel is incredibly complicated, Scott Lang can’t help but work in, “so Back to the Future’s a bunch of bullsh*t?” MCU movies have gotten funnier as time goes on. Why? Because Marvel has figured out what works.
