A quirky dark action comedy known asKingsman: The Secret Service’ came out back in 2014. After immense success, it soon became a franchise, with a second movie premiering in 2017 and now a prequel film as well as a third installment slated for the future. The current film, set to release in a little over a year is titledThe King’s Man’.

A new installment in the Kingman franchise, this film will take place in the early 1900s. The official plot description released by 20th Century Studios is: “As a collection of history’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man must race against time to stop them. Discover the origins of the very first independent intelligence agency in The King’s Man.” Anyone who has a favorite film knows that what fans love more than anything is delving deeper into characters they love or origin stories. While we won’t get to see the star of the franchise, Eggsy, in this film, fans will get to explore the foundation of the organization of Kingsman, the fictional secret spy organization that intrigues any fans of the films.

While Often Labeled as Kingsman 3, the Film Will Actually be a Prequel

Anyone who has seen the first two Kingsman films—Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle— are excited to see the third one on the way. While there is a third film following the journey of fan-favorite characters set to be made in the near future, that is not The King’s Man. While The King’s Man is technically the third Kingsman movie to be made, it will be an origin story for what fans know as the secret spy organization of Kingsman. This means that this film will focus more on worldbuilding by explaining the origins of some of the most famous aspects of the Kingsman films. This will definitely be a unique twist from the expected plot points, but also a welcome one as many fans were a bit disappointed with the second film that did offer more exciting adventures, but lacked the original’s creative spark.

At New York Comic Con in 2019, director Matthew Vaughn explained, “We’ll discover why manners maketh man. We’ll discover why one of my favorite lines in the new film is ‘reputation is what people think you are, character is who you are.’ It’s got a lot of what I’ll call home truths for our modern society that would be good to remember. It’s an allegory of…World War I happened due to some crazy politicians and political movements that got out of control. Everybody thought there couldn’t be a war, and then it happened. We’re living in a crazy time right now.”

‘The King’s Man’ – Laying the Groundwork for Kingsman 3

Matthew Vaughn has explained that The King’s Man, while being a prequel to the entire franchise, will lay the groundwork for the actual Kingsman 3. Speaking to Empire, Vaughn explained, “We’ve put seeds for what’s going to happen in Kingsman 3 all the way back into this,” he said. “And it’s going to be very different.”

As of yet, most information for the actual Kingsman 3 has been kept on the down-low, however, in 2019, Taron Egerton confirmed that there is a script written for Kingsman 3. He explained, “It’s a really neat idea. That plan, at the moment, is that we’d like to do another one, one more time.” He went on to state, “I would like to do one more because frankly, I’d like to say goodbye to him [Eggsy] in a befitting way and to finish the trilogy. All good things come to an end. It was always imagined as a trilogy and I think it’d be great to finish the story off because I’ve loved playing the character.” This comes as no surprise since his role as Eggsy is what launched Egerton’s career.

Who is the Cast?

While fans are sad that Taron Egerton will not be appearing in The King’s Man, the film features an ensemble cast, which is full of known actors that are sure to excel in their roles.

Ralph Fiennes—known for his roles as Voldemort in the Harry Potter films and M in Skyfall, among many other roles—has been cast as the lead character, a Kingsman agent who takes a young man named Conrad under his wing. Harris Dickinson—known for his roles as Liam in The Darkest Minds and Prince Phillip in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil—will play Conrad, a young Kingsman agent who is learning the ropes. Gemma Arterton plays a fierce woman named Polly and Djimon Hounsou plays Shola, a man who trains new Kingsman recruits.

Other actors who appear in the film but have not had their roles disclosed yet include Tom Hollander, Stanley Tucci, Daniel Brühl, and Charles Dance.

A Continually Changing Release Date

This film’s journey to the big screen has been a shuffle of various release dates. Originally, The King’s Man was supposed to be released on November 15, 2019. Then, back in February of 2019, it was announced that the release would be pushed to February 14, 2020, leaving the November slot to be filled by 20th Century Fox’s film Ford v. Ferrari. Then, when Disney bought 20th Century Fox, the film was even further delayed since the Kingsman franchise was owned by 20th Century Fox. Following this merger, Disney shuffled around release dates in November of 2019, pushing the film further back to September 18th, 2020.

All of this release date craziness also occurred before the coronavirus pandemic hit, which of course has caused further delays. In August of 2020, Disney announced that the film would premiere on February 26, 2021, in the hopes that theaters will be open by that date, and the film will achieve high box office numbers. However, in an interesting move only a month later, Disney brought up the release date to February 12th, 2021, which is the current slated release date.
