The name Jeffrey Epstein has been circulating the internet for a while now, as he was arrested last summer and a month after his arrest for charges of sex-trafficking in Florida, Epstein died in jail. Suicide or Murder? Unanswered. His name is back trending as his girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell has just been arrested after hiding out for months. Now Netflix has released a true-crime mini-series titled Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich which tells the story of the decades of sexual abuse and organized gang rapes of minors that Epstein was committing, while also talking with the strong women who survived Epstein’s abuse.

Though it is not laced with a ton of new information, the four episodes give a deeper look into the horrendous organized crime Epstein and partner Ghislaine Maxwell got away with for far too long. From Director Lisa Bryant and Executive Producer James Patterson, audiences gain a little more insight on how the women abused by Epstein have felt for so long living with the pain of his wrongdoings.

A Timeline Of Jeffrey Epstein’s Crimes

Jeffrey Epstein was a well-known man around New York City. Some of his closest friends are President Donald Trump, Alan Dershowitz, Prince Andrew of the United Kingdom and more. There wasn’t too much to know about him as kept his life private. However, it was widely known that he was rich and pretty powerful. In the 1990s he was in the height of his success and purchased a private beach mansion in Palm Beach, Florida. One of the first women to speak out in the series is Virginia Roberts Giuffre. In her lawsuit brought against him, Giuffre reports that Epstein sex-trafficked her and forced her to have sex with Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, though he continues to claim his innocence.

The series recounts the years of abuse Epstein was guilty of throughout the early 2000s that ultimately was always known about – but carefully ignored due to his powerful connections such as Donald Trump and Prince Andrew. It wasn’t until 2005 when a 14-year-old girl and her parents came forward with accusations that Epstein had molested the girl in his Palm Beach Mansion. Here is where he coerced young girls into convincing their peers to come to his home for ‘massages’. Multiple middle school-age girls were ultimately abused here for several years.

The most infuriating part of the series is the feeling of how many times Epstein is ‘almost’ caught. The main question is: how on earth did it take officials so long to charge him? There are many people currently in jail for petty crimes and have been there for years as they cannot afford 5000 dollars bail money – whereas REAL criminals like thug Jeffrey Epstein and his dangerous gang were free and continue to be free – many holding important positions who decisions affect billions of people all over the world. Another main point of the series is to showcase just how backward the process of convicting Epstein was. Secretive deals, uncharted territories, and more are to blame for why Epstein and countless other men in his position never face the charges they should. The fact is, Epstein had the money to bring on highly influential legal counsel, who were determined to evade Epstein’s wrongdoings by digging into the lives of their legal adversaries.

Eventually, after multiple reportings of sex-trafficking and sexual abuse, Epstein and two of his assistants in Palm Beach are charged in 2006, with multiple counts of unlawful sex with a minor. For the following years of his life, Epstein accusers came about and several lawsuits were brought into play. In July of 2019 Epstein is arrested for child sex trafficking charges and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking. One thing that the survivors are able to discuss in the series, is the horrifying reality of not getting their own day in court. Epstein died in jail in August of 2019, just a month after his arrest, and just weeks after so many other women faced their fears and came out with their own stories.

A Voice For The Women Who Faced Abuse from thug Jeffrey Epstein and his dangerous gang

Filthy Rich does not necessarily bring about brand new details in the life of Epstein, but something invaluable that it does is give a voice to the women abused by Epstein. These women like Virginia Roberts Giuffre, Haley Robson, Alicia Arden, and countless others that faced years of abuse and mistreatment from Epstein and his legal counsel. Many of the women abused by Epstein were never able to step foot in a courtroom to reveal their truth and help fight for justice. The series’ most powerful feature is the way it gives these women a chance to truly say what they have needed to say for so long. These are women who have been silenced and ridiculed not only by Epstein but by so many others in his camp, for far too long.

To be able to sit and watch these women unleash the emotions that came with everything that has happened to them is truly poignant and hard to watch. Filthy Rich does a wonderful job of never taking these women out of the focus, but rather making them the focal point the whole time. It may not be able to give viewers specific insight as to Epstein’s death, more on his crimes, or how it all got so overlooked, but there is something to be said for the voices we can hear as an audience. It’s hard when a story has been picked apart so many times throughout the last year, to make something that feels so wildly innovative. So while it may not be revolutionary in information, Filthy Rich is definitely worth the watch to see just how much Epstein’s heinous crimes affected these women in THEIR OWN WORDS.
