Netflix’s Anne with an E recounts the story of bright and quick-witted Anne Shirley, an orphan girl taken in by the Cuthbert siblings in Green Gables. As the brother and sister get older and need help on their farm, they send away for a young boy, only to be met with none other than Anne. She flips their world upside down as audiences see in the first three seasons. Unfortunately, the hit series has not been renewed for a fourth and fans are not okay with it.

Giving Anne of Green Gables a Place To Be Revisited

The classic story of Anne of Green Gables has been retold in this Netflix original series in a way that makes it feel modern. Whether it takes place in the 1800s or not, the series makes issues of the 21st century seem relevant and heard. Audiences can see the narrative of young Anne Shirley evolve over the three seasons. As she once started as a plucky teen, fighting to find her spot, viewers see more and more into her past, learning about the years of abuse she’s endured. This story about a makeshift family delves into issues related to homophobia, racism, and abuse. It also touches on all the things that traumatized us as young teens (cue Anne getting her period for the first time).

It talks about the things that so many series are afraid to discuss, and have been afraid of for decades. This is one of the many reasons the show has connected to so many people. Bash encounters racism in Avonlea, we are introduced to LGBTQ+ characters in season 2, and the show takes audiences on a heart-wrenching journey of friendship and hardships. Everything that makes up these carefully thought-out episodes is what garnered the show so many supporters. Even Sam Smith is obsessed!

The Call For a Fourth Season of Anne with an E

So many people were devastated to hear the show wasn’t being renewed for a fourth installment (don’t tell Sam Smith). The die-hard fans of Anne with an E see no reason why there shouldn’t be a fourth season of the series. There has been major backlash online and even a petition started to renew the show. Fans have stormed Twitter and Change.org with the movement of #RenewAnneWithAnE and remain hopeful that they can change the production companies’ minds. The Canadian Broadcasting Company and Netflix claim they came to a joint agreement regarding the future of the show, but many have recounted that the CBC’s president stated that she felt Netflix was getting more out of their deal on the show in the first place, in 2019. Many are still hopeful that the show could make a comeback.

The Moxy of Anne’s Coming Of Age Story

The beautiful retelling of Anne Shirley’s story is one that fans are unwilling to let go of, and it’s easy to see why. The adaptation of this classic story has found a home in the series, and fans have connected to its heart and soul. At the core, Anne with an E has brought light to the odd and often confusing times that we face in our early teenage years, and the importance of family and friendship, even if it isn’t all in black and white. That grey area is what makes this show so raw and edgy.

There is so much more of Anne’s story that has yet to be told as she gets older and learns more about the world around her. She is constantly pushing to open the minds of those around her, and as she grows so does her biography. This story is an important one, and if you believe this to be true as well, sign the petition and make your voice heard! #RenewAnneWithAnE
