Hollywood Insider Courteney Cox, Scream 5

We are going to scream! Why’s that? Courteney Cox is making a return to her role as Gale Weathers in the Scream franchise, that is why. The Friends actress is set to reunite with her Scream castmates with Paramount Pictures announcing a 2021 release date. The film was set to start filming earlier this year, that is until COVID-19 came to town. Now that Hollywood is slowly getting back on track, Cox is set to get to work pretty soon and we can’t wait.

Wes Craven’s Vision

Cox made her official statement on Instagram, posting a video of the famous white masked face we all know and love, accompanied with “I can’t wait to see this face again.” Us too Courteney! Cox starred as Gale Weathers, the often overeager and overbearing news reporter who followed the murders oh so closely. Her character arc over the 4 movies was great, because it showed Gale’s softer side. I guess escaping murder multiple times really makes you rethink your attitude. She forms an odd kind of bond with Dewey and Sidney, having shared traumatic experiences, but nevertheless she remains a go-getter with fire in her eyes. Cox is the perfect actress for the role, offering her own bright spirit to Gale and really leaning into the investigative qualities in her character. Plot details are pretty much under wraps, but if the writers of Scream 5 are any indication as to how this next chapter will play out, it’s going to be epic. Co-writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick are known for a number of films including Ready or Not, Zodiac, Castle Rock, and The Amazing Spider-Man.

Director of Scream and the mind that brought us Nightmare On Elm Street, Wes Craven accomplished extreme success in the horror movie genre. His movies are considered classics at this point, so when the announcement came that the Scream franchise would continue his legacy with a fifth installation, fans were extremely excited. In 1984 Craven’s Nightmare On Elm Street rocked the world of horror movies. Freddy Krueger has been a pinnacle character ever since, and even people unfamiliar with the movie, definitely know that name.

Then came the first installment of Scream in 1996. For those that don’t know, the film follows a group of teenagers in an otherwise sleepy suburban town as a masked villain wreaks havoc, and proceeds on a killing spree. The slasher movie really gave a brand new name to the horror genre, and with names like Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Drew Barrymore and more it’s no wonder why Craven’s vision bagged multiple installments. Co-writer for the fifth film, James Vanderbilt, described the newest slasher flick as a love letter to the late Wes Craven, and all of the loyal fans who have fallen in love with Craven’s vision for the series and genre of horror as well.

When talking about collaborating with producer for the film, Kevin Williamson, who also wrote Scream 2 and Scream 4, Vanderbilt said, “Just the fact that we get to sit in a room with Kevin Williamson and talk about a new Scream movie is a dream come true for me. For years I’ve wanted to see a new Scream movie, and now we get to help make one. We want this to be a love letter to the movies Wes and Kevin created together and to the fans.”

Courteney Cox On The Big Screen

If you haven’t heard of Friends…where have you been? Courteney Cox played the responsible, slight control freak, chef Monica Geller. She was the ‘mom’ of the group and always had a particular plan thought out much in advance. It was her way or the highway but she was incredibly love-able. Friends was by no means Cox’s first ever acting role, however I think we can all concur it is the role that truly put her, and her costars, on the map. In the height of her Friends success, she booked the role of Gale Weathers in Scream. The film became an instant horror hit and the franchise’s success very quickly knew no bounds. It might not be blatantly obvious but the characters do share some characteristics. The thing that’s so wonderful about Cox is that you can tell she really puts her all into each role. With both Monica and Gale she brings in that gumption and intensity that makes the characters so endearing to watch. They may be harsh at times but their honesty is quite lovable.

I won’t lie, it’s a little hard for me to not accidentally refer to Courteney Cox as Monica Geller, but she is much more than just Friends. The last time we saw Cox on the big screen was as Beth in Mothers and Daughters which hit theaters in 2016. Since then she has had a slew of television guest star appearances and a role in a TV movie.

And who could forget her show Cougar Town, which got her a Golden Globe nomination. Cox not only acted on the hit show, but also served as an executive producer and lent her directing skills to 12 episodes of the comedy show. Alongside Cox, David Arquette will also be returning for the fifth Scream movie. He told Deadline about returning, “I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new. Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honoring Wes Craven’s legacy.” Neve Campbell is also in negotiations to return, and feels positively about the film at this point.

We cannot wait to see the famous Ghostface on our screens once again. It is clear to everyone who has worked with him and fans alike, that Wes Craven’s legacy is one that will live on forever. Scream 5 is set to be yet another amazing film with chilling suspense…someone get the popcorn!
