The Hollywood Insider SNL 47th Season Review

Photo: Saturday Night Live

SNL is one of the most renowned comedy late-night shows of our century. Its ability to spoof at real-life problems and events in an entertaining and still provocative way is the reason why Saturday night live has maintained its fame and credibility

Saturday night live originally premiered on October 11 of 1975 hosted by George Carlin. Its streaming service has still remained the same, NBC, but its original title was NBC Saturday night. It was created by Loren Michaels and Dick Eberson in their mission to bring to life their vision for a live television sketch comedy series. Now Michael serves as one of the program’s showrunners and helps maintain its authenticity.

Saturday Night Live Season 47 –  Structure, Skits, and What To Expect

The structure of the show remains constant throughout the different episodes including comedy sketches, which we already discussed often parody daily culture and politics, with a large cast reoccurring of actors and other contributors who are featured in specific episodes.

Each episode is hosted by a celebrity guest and they are tasked with the opening monologue and often partake in many of the sketches with the regular cast. There are also always performances by featured musical guest stars and each episode is known to begin with a cold open sketch. The sketch always ends with one of the cast members looking straight at the camera and saying, “live from New York it’s Saturday night!” which is the signal the show has begun.

Cast We Should Keep An Eye Out For

As of last season, season 46 there have been 156 cast members included some of which range from Rachel Dratch Amy Poehler, Chris Rock, David Spade, Will Forte, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tracy Morgan, Chris Parnell, Maya Rudolph, Andy Samberg, Kristen Wiig, and many others.

The longest-standing cast member is Kenan Thompson, who first joined in 2003 and is now completing his 19th season on the show. If you’re selected to join the cast of SNL, you have to have been an accomplished performer or recruited specifically because of your skills within a comedic group.

However, one of the most coveted positions is on the most popular segment of the show – the host of the Weekend Update. This segment usually alternates between having one or two hosts and allowing cast members to be themselves on the camera and deliver weekend updates about events occurring in recent pop culture and media. After many changes, The faces of this segment are now Colin Jost and Michael Che, strong writers and leading players for the Weekend Update segment.

The cast of SNL is often put into two separate tears – established groups of players and cast members who have a reigning spot in the SNL Hall of Fame or those who are new but have a chance to prove themselves and join repertory status.

Season 47’s Banging Start and Future Projects

A new season of SNL started earlier this month, season 47, and brings a lot of change and exciting hubbub. The season opened with Owen Wilson as the host and Casey Musgraves as the musical guest star, making for an entertaining and welcome return back to the big screen. This season also reigns special because it will be live-streamed on Peacock, a streaming service that fans can purchase.

The first few episodes, filmed at studio H at Rockafella Center, featured a star-studded cast with some actors making their hosting debuts for this very season. The star of Ted Lasso and SNL’s very own alumni, Jason Sudeikis hosted SNL as well as Kim Kardashian West and Rami Malik, who won an Oscar for his performance as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody

The next live episode for you to catch it’s on November 13 and is hosted by Jonathan Majors who is the head star of Netflix’s ‘Black Western the Harder They Fall.’ The musical guest will be Taylor Swift who will have re-released one of her most famous albums, Red, the day before.

November 20 will feature Saweetie as the musical guest star, famous for her female contributions to the rap genre, and Simu Liu who is hosting the episode. He is the star of the new Marvel movie, ‘Shang Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings .’

Who Is Leaving the SNL Family

Unfortunately, all these changes bring about the removal of many original cast members’ time in the Saturday Night Live family. Mostly everyone from season 46 will be returning except Beck Bennett and Lauren Holt, who was a featured player and cast newbie in season 46. Bennett who has reprised many iconic roles, like Putin during the 2016 election skits, took to Instagram to bid his farewell to the series.

“Love you, SNL. Gonna miss you so much. Thank you for 8 years of remarkable people and incredible experiences that completely changed my life. I had so much fun.”

Despite many cast members having outgrown their roles on SNL, the creator Lorne Michaels wishes to keep many of them until the 50th season. This includes Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, and Kenan Thompson who all delivered a very bittersweet and tearful goodbye in the Season 46 finale that led fans to speculate they wouldn’t be returning. Thankfully, Season 47 confirmed they would be back alongside regulars like Kyle Mooney, Mikey Day, Chloe Fineman, Heidi Gardner, calling Jose, Michael Che, Alex Moffat, Ego Nwodim, Chris Redd, Melissa Villaseñor, and Bowen Yang.

Pete Davidson: Fan Favorite SNL Member

With a very huge young fan base, many were concerned about Pete Davidson‘s return to the show. But he took to social media to speak on his future at SNL. Despite admitting in June 2021 that he wasn’t sure whether he would return due to scheduling issues and an emotional Season 46, fans were ecstatic to see him return the first few episodes of the 47th season. While everything is still up in the air, hopefully, this means that Pete is here to stay.

Perhaps most exciting is the return of a live audience. During the COVID-19 pandemic, live audiences were forbidden from attending the recordings of Saturday Night Live, erasing some of the authenticity and excitement that came with the show being recorded right in front of your eyes.

Thankfully all of this has returned and fans are able to see all their favorites on stage and laugh alongside those of us who will be watching from our couches and living rooms. To catch the next few episodes of Saturday Night Live make sure to tune in to NBC and keep an eye out for tickets that are already being sold for the upcoming and most probably equally exciting season of the show.
