‘Till’: A Harrowing, Heartbreaking, And Infuriating Story About a Mother and Her Son

Photo: ‘Till’

Till’ follows the true events leading up to the infamous lynching, brutalization, and murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till as well as its immediate aftermath.  Simply put, this movie is fantastic.  This was a film tasked with making the audience feel for themselves the number of emotions that a grieving mother would feel when fighting for justice when the odds are overwhelmingly stacked against her.  And wow, did it succeed.  It would take a long while to try and recall when another film made you scared, heartbroken, angry, and shocked, all within the span of two hours.

For one thing, the various performances carry the film such a long way, the lead being the obvious standout which we’ll get back to shortly.  But it’s also certain decisions and choices that director Chinonye Chukwu makes that may seem minuscule or of little importance in many other stories that really make all the difference in establishing a sturdy emotional connection with the viewer.  A well-balanced story, rich performances, and a conscientiously crafted script cement ‘Till’ as a worthy recounting of a grim moment in history.

Danielle Deadwyler Makes a Name for Herself

Assuming the Academy Awards still mean anything anymore or were of any actual importance in the first place, they may as well call it now.  Danielle Deadwyler is a lock to win Best Actress of the year.  What she was able to bring out of the character of Mamie Till was indescribably astounding.  It’s impossible to overestimate the impact her performance alone had on the audience.  This person is a mother first and foremost.  And a mother’s entire world revolves around her child.  When that child is taken away, her whole world falls apart and we as the audience felt that world crashing down on us.  Deadwyler not only successfully links up the viewer to her unimaginable grief, but also knows when to convey different types of emotional trauma and to what levels throughout this horrific process.  For example (and there’s really nothing to be considered a spoiler as we know the story), she hones in on the feeling of helplessness when her son is delivered back to her in a box whereas she expresses absolute shock and horror when first examining her son’s body.  Yet we can see on her face that she is trying with every ounce of strength she has to keep her composure, but she just can’t.

But perhaps the standout moment when this was on display was her courtroom testimony.  When Deadwyler is up on that stand, the camera wisely stays on her the entire scene.  From doing so, we can see the immense amount of pressure she’s under with an entire courtroom against her.  She tries incredibly hard to avoid slipping up in any potential way, and watching her do so will cause your muscles to tighten in the hopes that she doesn’t give them any reason to disregard what she is saying.  On top of all that, she clearly knows that letting her emotions take hold of her when up there on the stand would cause them all to dismiss her as crazy and not to be taken seriously.  When her testimony does conclude, we breathe a sigh of relief, thankful that there was no part of her testimony that could be perceived as a mistake on her part.  How Deadwyler was able to pull this off is indiscernible.  The supporting cast of Whoopi Goldberg, Frankie Faison, John Douglas Thompson, Sean Patrick Thomas, and D’Mile were all astounding as well.

‘Till’ – The Little Things Make All the Difference

The film earns its emotional connection with the audience not only through its performances, but also from the little details that go a long way in amplifying what the struggle for racial justice means on a deeply personal level. Jalyn Hill does a terrific job playing Emmett Till himself, but it is both the performance and the writing of the character that leads to our heartbreak when what happens to him eventually happens.  This is a kid who just wants to enjoy his teenage life and have a memorable vacation with his cousins.  Many of us can see ourselves in Emmett from his interests, his excitement, and his curiosity about the world around him.  We don’t see what ultimately happens to him, but we do not need to.  We hear it loud and clear. And it is gut-wrenching.

One thing that can also be appreciated is how the film did not overcomplicate things or get in its own way to make itself seem grandiose simply for the sake of catching Oscar buzz.  Yet at the same time, it didn’t oversimplify its central message of what the American INjustice system fosters or water down the repercussions of this incident and the trial that followed.  The film also has certain lines of dialogue sprinkled throughout that are packed with so much weight and meaning that don’t beat the viewer over the head, but rather draw us into Mamie’s plight even further.  The very last scene in the film features no dialogue, yet is probably the most moving scene in any film all year and should bring a few tears out of any person with an ounce of empathy within them.

Looking At This Film With The Minimal Progress We’ve Made Towards Change

As with most biographical dramas (again not a spoiler), the film finishes with a recounting of what later happens to the individuals involved in the incident.  Those who know will feel no less infuriated after what they just watched. Those who do not will find their jaw-dropping and feel just as appalled. The mere fact that the Emmett Till Antilynchimg Act was just passed this year, 67 years after it happened, is completely mind-boggling.  The fact that lynching was never already a federal crime, even more so.  Regardless, this film succeeds in every way and then some in analyzing racial injustice on a personal and societal level and, from a filmmaking perspective, cements itself as one of the best films of 2022.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.
