Timothée Chalamet opens up about his film Beautiful Boy and the way it has transformed him causing him to speak up for addiction recovery and rehabilitation. Having a career built on a strong record of groundbreaking movies and characters, at such as young age, has enlightened the actor into having experiences that are more than just acting. He becomes the character, the role and embodies the soul of the persona he is playing on-screen, and off-screen it adds to who he is as a person in a cathartic manner.
In an interview with W Magazine, he mentions that he hopes that Beautiful Boy, a movie about a person in the throes of addiction, will show people the reality of substance abuse and recovery, as he asserts, “I feel so lucky to that I’ve been able to, work on things that are eye-opening.” The film is based on the true story of Nic Sheff, and his father David Sheff and their journey out of a family gripped by the son (Nic) being addicted to drugs and his struggles while overcoming the problem.

Chalamet goes on to state that stereotyping drug addiction is an error that everyone should avoid, as he affirms, “And that was the learning grace of this movie for me; addiction doesn’t have a face, it has no preferred class, or gender, or race.” He hopes that the movie will push audiences to be “uncomfortable” and stop the unhealthy and pointless easy rhetoric, of “Oh, well, that doesn’t affect me or my family or my friends” as the truth is that drug abuse is everywhere.
Chalamet takes solace in the fact that people “are really grateful and thankful” that the movie and its story is “saving their lives.” But he takes it further by using his platform to talk about the dangerous fact there is ZERO regulation for rehabilitation center regulation in America, which worries him, as he mentions, “There’s no rehabilitation center regulation in America. Anyone can open a rehab, basically”, and he goes on to warn, “And for these really intense substances, you don’t want to be swinging your shot.”
